The great thing about rock drumming is that it cuts across all styles of music whether it would be a rap, RnB, soul, country, hard rock, heavy metal, funk blues, you name it. Rock drum is an all go styles of music. So, it is not so much about what type of beat that you are playing when you are drumming, it is how the beat is played by which determines its style.
Another good thing for you to remember as a drummer and this is my philosophy by how you play the drum, it is that you are the heart and soul of the band. The music does not begin without you, it does not continue to play without you and the music does not end without you. It is like in the human body, the heart, it pumps the blood, it keeps the body moving, it drives the body and that is what you are to the band. You are the heart of the band.
Two main words, two things to keep in mind, these are the vocabulary words for you today, tempo and dynamics. Tempo is how slow or how fast you play a beat. It is very important to remember that, and also, dynamics. Dynamics are how soft or how hard you play the drums. It is very important in the beginning to have a good sense of tempo in dynamics. There is nothing worst than playing with a band when the whole band brings the sound down and you are continuing to play extremely loud or your tempo is fluctuating. Your meter is slow and fast, slow and fast. It drives the music back and forth. It is important to have a consistent tempo while playing.
