How to spy on your neighbors _ Van Eck Phreaking
Male1: I first read about Van Eck Phreaking in a science fiction novel. Actually, it was Neil Stevens script in on my cab and it was and the idea was that every CRT monitor puts out electromagnetic radiation which in theory, if you intercept it and interpreted, you could see what was displayed on that monitor. Van Eck Phreaking, that must have been the guy in Van Eck who figure this out
Male2: Yes, there must have been. I do not know where exactly they were originated from but-
Male1: But I thought it was sci-fi.
Male2: It is a lie, it is a lie, until I came across this program but let us show everybody home exactly what we are talking about. We got some a little animation. Check this out!
Male1: This is a demo.
Male2: This is a demo, let us say you are sitting at home, you are doing a little web browsing, surfing around.
Male1: You are broadcasting!
Male2: You are broadcasting, those frequencies are going outside of your monitors, some one could be potentially sit there and then pick up a mere image of exactly what you are doing just by picking up those frequencies and then reinterpreting them with special proprietary software that have to be a lot things in place to make that happen.
Male1: But before we make everybody paranoid and crazy.
Male2: Yes.
Male1: Looking for vans and black helicopters, we just say we do not know that this is possible.
Male2: We do not know that this exist but the government did have a top secret program called tempest.
Male1: This is in the 60s and 70s.
Male2: In the 60s and the 70s, you got to think that if we can demo what we are about to do today that they have the technology.
Male1: If it is possible they are doing it.
Male2: If it is possible they are doing it.
Male1: And we will show you, what we are about to show you will give you an idea that it might be possible.
Male2: Might be possible.
Male1: So what do you got here?
Male2: This is standard Linux box, this is running red hot and there is an open source program that it is name after the top secret program called tempest. And so what I am going to do, I am in a shell and I am going to launch of the program called tempest and it is going to display a bunch of different bars and grass across the screen. Now, let me show you exactly what I am going to do. Here I have short wave radio, take a look at this here.
Male1: What frequency are you going to tune this to?
Male2: This right here, I am going to set to right around 10 megahertz of the short waves.
Male1: Okay.
Male2: This is what is said to and what is going to do, is this bar are going to be displaying on the screen and without a sound car, without anything just by the frequencies that the monitors are picking up, it is going to be able to pick up the mp3 that I am playing on here. Without any wires, without anything, right on the radio.
Male1: Alright, let see that can not be. I do not know.
Male2: We will launch it right here, and there are the bars, let us turn on the radio.
Male1: So what you are seeing on the screens is actually generating RF.
Male2: Yes. That is the mp3 right there.
Male1: Fairly at least that you have never heard it before, that is bizarre!
Male2: Isn’t that crazy?
Male1: No! It is a bit of a job to say I could go from being able to hear those bars to sing. I could see what it is in your screen.
Male2: True!
Male1: But then you can see the principles RF is coming out of that.
Male2: I mean, look at this images are displaying those frequencies. I mean if we could just to figure out what images corresponds to which frequencies, you can built something that would pick those up.
Male1: Now, one of the things, I think the whole purpose of tempest was to figure out how to harden your hardware against this kind of tease from.
Male2: Exactly! Actually, we can take a lot from those top secret documents that they have now unveiled and learn from them and figure out how exactly how to protect our own homes or exactly how to shield are own homes from any of this getting outside the house.
Male1: That is this, where the stuff come out and then take it.
Male2: This is where the stuff comes in
Male1: What is this?
Male2: This here is a ferrety cage.
Male1: Okay.
Male2: And this is a copper mesh, actually the mesh that use in this cage here is actually the same mesh that they have on the tempest document. This is tempest back and we got it from and actually a local supplier here.
Male1: There is a company that sells these stuffs.
Male2: Yes, there is a company that sells it and it is pretty cool, let me show exactly how it works.
Male1: This is twpinc.
Male2: Yes, twpinc is the people that supplied it.
Male1: Okay.
Male2: And let me show you how it works, let us turns this to an FM radio.
Male1: That is twpinc. Okay, so we are listening to track a cone, we were put it on a box, now, already, it is already getting bad.
Male2: But the second we close the cage nothing but static.
Male1: It does not penetrate.
Male2: A little bit of signal, complete static. So, that is completely blocking out. Any of the frequencies that is a short waves and the same thing. If you put a short wave in here, turn it up.
Male1: Nothing!
Male2: Silence! Opens it up, and so.
Male1: What is this mean, I have to put my self in a box like this?
Male2: No! What you have to do it you, you do not have to do that. You can buy this stuff actually to line your walls with it or you put it inside the (Voice overlap), a bigger one, like this here and actually put this around your monitor. Now, that is what I do at home.
Male1: And then what?
Male2: You do not have to do this at home.
Male1: What do you do? How do you see the monitor?
Male2: Well, you can look through this mesh greater here or check this out! This is actually pretty cool! Look at this! This looks like satin and actually feels like satin.
Male1: Oh, yes!
Male2: But that is 100 % copper right there!
Male1: No kidding!
Male2: Yes, this is just very fine mesh.
Male1: It does not have any the copper colors, isn’t it?
Male2: No! It does not! Isn’t that crazy! It is so microscopic; I mean it is just amazing mesh.
Male1: So you can see through this, is just fine?
Male2: Right! You can actually press it between 2 pieces of PVC or the plastic, clear plastic and you actually see exactly right to the monitor.
Male1: So that can also be use to hide a monitor.
Male2: But here is the deal though, you have to know that you have to look at the grate of copper mesh because every single different grate of mesh blocks a certain frequency. So the tighter it is together, it is going to block a different range and if it spreads out a little bit.
Male1: And it does tighter, it is not sell to get everything. It is not like a shove.
Male2: Exactly!
Male1: It has to with the wave link.
Male2: Exactly! So if you want to block cellphone, let us say you want to block cellphone, you are in a movie theater and you are trying, you want to have to do the research, find out what range is of the cellphone is operate on and then buy there appropriate copper mesh it. (Voice Overlaps)
Male1: Are theater are doing that?
Male2: I do not know if any theaters are doing it but there are certain places were cellphone are not allowed. Certain government agencies that I know that have their shield with the governments staff.
Male1: My gym is doing this actually in the locker room, so pentagon places like that they have copper mesh?
Male2: Yes.
Male1: In the wall?
Male2: They do.
Male1: It is more practical and try to put yourself in a box.
Male2: Definitely!
Male1: But they definitely put it in a whole building.
Male2: Where is that movie? There is movie that it was completely surrounded by the copper gate?
Male1: Oh yes. It was-
Male3: Enemy of the State!
Male1: Pardon!
Male2: Enemy of the State that is right!
Male1: That is Gene Hackman, it was wonderful!
Male2: Yes, same as his agent, Will Smith himself.
Male1: Yes. He was in that case but maybe he knew more than with what he realizes.
