Molly: My name is Molly and I am one of the co-owners of Nochi and it is a really pretty, pretty shop on Main Street Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard.
Sofya: I am Sofya Nadelstein and I am Molly’s partner in the store. Molly takes care of antiques and linens and I take care of fresh flowers and parties.
Molly: I am going to tell you a little bit about gathering a collection and I think that the first is just to begin.
Find something that you are attracted to, something like, something that catches your interest. And the other thing to know, that if you have three of something, you can call it a collection. So now you have begun.
The next thing I think that is important about a collection is to really learn about it. So, one of the best thing to do is to look at pieces everywhere. See if you can compare and see what is really good thing.
One of the great things about learning about a collection and beginning a collection is where it can take you. It can be totally free, like collecting sea glass which takes you on a big nice long walk and keeps you walking and walking.
It can be something that—it is something like many people over the ages have collected stamps which take you really educational trip and you find out things, you find out about countries, you probably could collect stamps from countries that do not even exist anymore. So that is a great trip to take.
If you say you are collecting antiques, something you can do with friends and it is a way to bond with friends and they are helping you look for that missing piece for that special item. So it could be a lot of fun to have a collection.
So now you are learning about it, and then I think the next thing to do is to figure out the value of what you are doing. So one of the things that you could do is you can check, like they have the blue book for card, you can track it, you can see what the value is. You can shop around and you can start to compare and look and compare your examples to other examples.
Now another thing that you really need to do with a collection is display it. So if it is something like butterflies or something that you can hang, then you can do that. If it is something that maybe you just catalogued, then keep it tucked away. And it can be something else, altogether, that you can use and you can update it whenever you can. Sometimes it is really good to really edit your collection, and as it increases in value and collectability, add it out some of the less impressive pieces.
And I think that, the last thing to do is to really enjoy it. The thrill of the hunt is what keeps most people collecting. They cannot wait to get to someplace where they think they might find that perfect, perfect piece. So really enjoying it is great.
I know one of the things that I collect are heart rocks and I find them on the beach. And now I have, not only a collection of heart rocks, but I have a collection of friends who looks for heart rocks for me, so have fun.
