How to Treat Cuts

Speaker: Hi! Joe Graedon; I am a pharmacologist. I write in a syndicated newspaper column called People’s Pharmacy and co-host a radio show. You know, when you cut yourself, maybe in the kitchen or you nick yourself when you are shaving and you are bleeding, it’s really inconvenient and yeah, you might try a piece of toilet paper to stop that bleeding, but then you forget you’ve got the paper and it follows you around the rest of day and that’s kind of silly. What else can you do from minor cut or a scratch? Well, it turns out that, black pepper works amazingly well. I know that it sounds like the last thing you would want to put on a cut or a scratch, but black pepper will stop the bleeding almost instantly and it doesn’t hurt at all. Thyme powder will also work and so will cayenne powder for that matter. If you go into the pharmacy, you will find that there are products like Liquid Band-Aid and that bandage will stop the bleeding. There is also QR powder that works almost instantly to stop a nosebleed and that QR powder will also work for other cuts and scratches. Here is one I really love. Nuns and teachers have been dealing with nosebleeds for kids for decades, maybe even for centuries and they tell us that you just put some cold keys down the back of the neck. Oh! There is a shiver factor or something, we don’t know exactly how it works, but it helps that nosebleed go away almost immediately.
