I have been a Level Force since 1983. I have been a member of the demo team and the inter ski teams from ’87 all the way to 2002. I was the Western Course Director for the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance for the past 14 years before coming back to Silver Star to run this new sports crew here.
Well, hi, I am Norman Croitz here at beautiful Silver Star Mountain Resort. What we are going to try to show you today is going from the beautifully groom terrain that we have here at Silver Star in to some of the bumpier stuff. We are going to give you some tips on how to make that bump skiing a lot easier.
So here on the flats, we can end up making beautiful round, smooth turns. Modern skis and modern grooming makes skiing really easy. But what happens when the terrain starts to get a little bit more difficult? Now what we have to add a little bit more movement to our skiing and end up trying to be more active.
So here we are, we take this nice smooth turns we did on the flat and we are going to work on trying to get them going here in the rougher terrain. I am into some broken snow and I am going to just let the bump lift me a little bit, help out like coming up a bit and all of the sudden I make this really tough snow look pretty simple to ski this way.
So as I approach the bump, notice how my ski here is bent, much like a trampoline would bend if I was bouncing on a trampoline. So as you approach the bump, think off touching your pole on the upside of the bump and then starting to extend the ankle, the knee and the hip here and it will help get you up in the air so that you can make your turn up in the air. Take a look here, my ski unbends and I end up launching myself in the air to help me start my turn.
Well, I hope those tips have helped you. If we review those tips once again, we want to be active in the bumps so as oppose to passive. Do not let the terrain dictate where you are going to go, you be the boss in there and the next time when we will see you, we will see you on the backside of our mountain in the steep terrain.
