Female: Here is an easy one to start with. If we boil just enough water to make one quick cup of tea instead of filling the entire kettle, we can save enough electricity at about 2/3 of the UK street lighting. Surely it is better not to stay in the dark.
Male: Turn down the heating. Just one degree cooler could cut your heating bill by 10% and you will never notice it.
Female: You know all those lovely electronic gadgets that make our lives more pleasurable, like TVs, DVDs, and computers but don’t leave them on standby. Switch them off. It may sound crazy but almost a billion pounds worth of electricity is wasted every year by people not going this.
Male: Heat rises. So start at the top. Not a third of your heating bill is loft insulation. So if you haven’t got it get it. If you have, make sure it is 10 inches thick. Half the homes in the UK need their insulation topping up.
Female: When there are so many people, it takes to change a light bulb. Well, none if it is an energy saving one. They last almost 12 times longer than your average light bulb. What is more, if every household fitted just one, the carbon dioxide emission saved would fill the Royal Albert Hall almost 2000 times.
Male: Don’t burn a hole in your pocket. That is probably what your boiler is doing. If it more than 15 year old, you could save a third of your heating by replacing it with a condensing boiler.
Female: The science of appliance, it is easy. When it is time to replace your white goods, just go for the ones with this symbol on them “Value is Less Energy” So they will have less impact on the environment and they will be cheaper to run.
Male: It takes more time to make a loaf of bread than it does to insulate the cavity walls in an average house - A trifling 3 hours. Having it done could also slice a third of your heating bill.
Turn down the temperature on your washing machine. With modern powders, you will still look as good at 30 degrees. And you will use around 40% less energy.
Female: And finally, when you do step outside of your home, don’t just get in the car. Take a little exercise, that one you may want to. If we all left our cars at home and walked or cycled those shorter journeys. We would save enough carbon dioxide to fill over 123 stadiums.
Male: You know, it is very clear that by making all kinds of conscious sensible decisions, just by thinking about the way we use energy in our homes, we can reduce our impact on the environment. And the more we make these decisions the more these changes go less like compromised is more like, improvements to our way of life. It is a bit of a no-brainer really isn’t it?
