Female Speaker: My job as a physical therapist is to take someone who has either been injured, had surgery, has some restrictions in their life and give them their life back. I started working with Wendy (ph) after her total knee replacement; her body just didn't heal the way it was supposed to.
Wendy: Going through therapy was real frustrating for me. I thought I would be back on my feet, doing the things I love to do, such as golf, going for bike rides. The pain I have on a scale of 1-to-10 is probably 8-9, everyday.
Female Speaker: Hey Wendy!
Wendy: Hi!
Female Speaker: Bend your knee back as far as you can for me. To go with Wendy is we get in that pool, we get her moving before that scar tissues starts to return and limit her. So first I am just going to submerge you. One of the first benefits of having her in water is that you take away the force of gravity and all the pressure and the pain that that can cause.
So right there you are bearing about 70% of your body weight and we are going to stay right there. I'll do a few things just to start to warm that knee up a little bit.
Working in the HydroWorx pool, you have access to an underwater treadmill and underwater cameras. When you watch yourself, you learn how to do it right.
So the next thing we are going to do is we are going to use this ring to stretch your knee.
The jets in the pool allow us to add increase resistance to running or to walking. So you really get stronger.
So if you look up there, you can see that actively, you are getting pretty close to 90 degrees. That is excellent.
How much pain are you in now?
Wendy: No pain.
Female Speaker: Scale on 0-10?
Wendy: 1.
Female Speaker: Really?
Wendy: Yeah.
Female Speaker: That's awesome; I have never heard you say that. Holy Smokes! Nice job, Wendy. They may give you 115 right there.
Wendy: Are you kidding?
Female Speaker: No, I am not kidding at all.
Wendy: Good.
Female Speaker: So I am very confident that doing the right things right now will give Wendy her life back.
Wendy: I feel real, real helpful right now and it feels really good.
