Do you ever wonder what these square boxes are hanging off the side of your hot water heating system with wires running to them?
Well hi! My name is Mark Donovan from homeadditionplus.com and I am going to tell you what these are and what their purpose is.
This is a zone valve. And a zone valve was used in a hot water heating system and its purpose is to control the flow of hot water from the boiler system up through the heating elements within your home. They are controlled by low voltage signal that comes from the thermostat. When thermostat senses of the room needs to be warmed up, the zone valve is turned on and water flows from the boiler system up through the heating elements and then back around into the boiler system.
When the thermostat gets to a level or it says the room is warming up, the zone sense a low voltage signal again back to the zone valve to tell it to shut off or close off. And heat stops coming to the room. A zone valve works in conjunction with the circulating pump in the boiler system and again, it is used to control the flow of hot water through the heating system throughout the zone. You will notice in this particular situation, there are multiple zones and that is three different zone valves here. And the purpose of this is so that you can have multiple thermostats in the house to control the heat in different areas of the house or different zones.
In the event that the zone valve fails, it will fail in two conditions. One, in the constant on-position, you will notice that the heat never shuts off in the particular zone or room that is associated with the zone valve. In other cases, the zone valve could fail so that it is shut off all the time and no matter what you do with the thermostat, you cannot turn heat on to the room. So in neither case, you need to have the zone valve replaced and serviced by a plumber. So that is the purpose of the zone valve.
