Hey YouTube! I’m here again, reviewing another laptop.
You guys have seen my Pavilion DV6809, Think Pad Z61T, and under here is my—the old E82300 Compaq—HP Compaq NC8230. Over here, we’ve got the not so new maybe, IBM or—well yeah, it’s still IBM now, IBM Think Pad, it’s a T42. I had the four digit number, like this is a 9442. I had that number on this, but I’m old and I forgot it.
So, it’s a couple of years old, as you can see its not wide screen, the native resolution is 1024 x 768. I do like this laptop quite a bit. I didn’t think I would, my dad actually brought it home from his office for me to take a look at for a little bit. But I like it quite a bit, it’s light, it’s probably about four pounds. I don’t know, I did not look it up. Says IBM Think Pad, they all do. I’ll open it up. I have both a track pad and a touch pad, whatever. So, let’s booth it up, Boot BIOS here. I think that is the IBM key, a couple times and then F1, and here’s the BIOS. IBM Bios setup utility. It looks to me like a Phoenix BIOS, correct me if I’m wrong.
Okay, let’s see. Installed memory, 512 meg, we have 1.7 GHz, Intel Pentium M processor. And it’s really not—from 1.7 GHz and a half a giga RAM, it’s pretty impressive, I think. It’s got the same BIOS as this does, but this has few more options in it. This does have the active protection system. We have no webcam, unfortunately, we have the Think Light right there. What we do over here, put it on. They do actually come in handy and I use them quite often, believe it or not. And I’ve never had a ball glider or anything. I just tried to use a mouse in the BIOS. We’ve got lots of things here, alarms. I’ve done that. We can look at memory options, networking USB, all the options you’d expect to find in a BIOS. But it’s a Think Pad BIOS, that means its better.
You can adjust the video memory, the brightness, a lot of options. it will take forever to go through them, so I’m not going to. Let’s boot the operating system. This machine was designed for Windows XP Professional service pack. Actually, I don’t know if it says service pack. Windows XP Pro, IBM Corp., okay. But anyways. I really do like it, as I have said, I’ve got XP Pro on it. It’s not mine, so it’s going to have the security junk on it, so it’s not going to be as fast as it probably would be. It’s not a DVD burner; it’s a DVD reader, CD reader, CD burner, all that good stuff.
Couple of things that might make it look old. Let’s take a look at the back. On the back, I think that’s an LPT port, I don’t even remember. They haven’t put those on machines in years. On the side, we’ve got two USB 2.0, video out, or S video out. We have Ethernet, dial-up, headphone jack, mic jack. It does have a built in PCI two of those, fan control. On the front, there’s one speaker, pretty loud, not the best quality but most laptops aren’t and there’s a VGA, if you can see that there. The inside, we’ve seen that. It’s really, really sturdy. Now, the Z series kind of feels a little bit. This is why it’s screen and there’s more plastic in this that feels almost cheaper. It’s a Think Pad, so it’s the best laptop in the world. But I think, this feels quite a bit more sturdy, like I could put weight on it, drop it if I were, but I’m not, and it would be fine.
As I said, it has the active protective system. We don’t have a log in here. It does have the active protection; it’s got volume control buttons here, powers in the middle. There’s XP. We’ve got an access IBM button, which is the same as the Think vantage button over here, the Pentium M sticker. It would have an XP Pro sticker, but somebody ripped that off. Pretty thin. It’s fast for half a gig of ram and 1.7 GHz. I’m not complaining. It is—I believe that’s a 14.1 or 14.4. It’s not wide screen, but the native resolution is 1024 x 768. Let’s see what—I don’t know if it can go higher than that. Actually, it might be able to.
This has a software called—well, you’ll probably see it here in a second. Everything you try to do it thinks it’s something bad and it tries to block it. But in the business, my dad said that that is necessary. Go to settings, 1024 x 768 is the highest or at least with this driver. But it’s light, it’s small, it’s pretty quick, and it’s sturdy and I really do like it a lot. I say it’s the second to a Z. I think I’d rather have T series but—but anyways, I like it quite a bit. I would recommend it for business use. I don’t think it’s any worse, or any better than a Dell Latitude D620, D600, D610, D630. However, the D8s, like a D8, my dad has a D830, that’s just fantastic. I don’t have anything bad to say about that except that it’s a Dell and I’m not a huge Dell fan.
Anyways, this has been the IBM or Lenovo Think Pad T42. Pretty sure it’s a T42P and thank you for watching. Please comment and/or subscribe.
