Implants and Detection of Breast Cancer

Sue: Hi! My name is Sue; I'm from Venice, Florida. I'm 38-years-old. I want to know if breast implants make it harder to detect breast cancer?

Julia Lawrence: Sue that's an interesting question and one that's been looked at and there is not actually a clear answer to that. In fact it does seem as if we miss more breast cancers on mammogram in women who do have implants. It's important there is a certain procedure that women should have done when they have a mammogram if they do have an implant.

However, we do find that women who have implants aren't getting breast cancers that are at more advanced stage or more aggressive. So whether the implant is in fact adversely affecting their breast cancer is kind of unknown at this point.
