Jennifer Matthews: Three years ago, Thelma and Miguel got married -- and were ready to start a family. Then Thelma developed irregular periods -- each time it didn't come, she thought she was pregnant. Each time, she was disappointed.
Thelma Bonilla: It's very hard because you are always, every month, you're thinking when?
Jennifer Matthews: It turned out, Thelma had polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS.
Dr. Linda Giudice: There is a small percentage of women who do ovulate with PCOS, and those women can become pregnant and have successful pregnancies, but it is a very small percentage.
Jennifer Matthews: Doctor Linda Giudice explains women with PCOS have high levels of testosterone and insulin. She's involved in a study to see if the fertility drug Clomid and the insulin sensitizer Metformin can help these women.
Dr. Linda Giudice: Not only are we looking at the ability to ovulate on these various medications, but we are comparing the effectiveness of each medication, or in combination, to the ability to get pregnant.
Jennifer Matthews: So far, the results have been encouraging. Many of the women who have completed the study have become pregnant.
Dr. Linda Giudice: It is a very special moment to know that someone's pregnancy test is positive.
Jennifer Matthews: Thelma now knows that feeling. She recently found out she's finally pregnant.
Thelma Bonilla: Oh, my God. I was crying. I was on the street, and everybody saw me, and there was one person who came to me and said, 'Are you Okay?'
