Installing Bike Hangers in the Garage
By HomeAdditionplus.com
Does your garage look like this where you have rows upon rows of bikes stacked up behind each other blocking your garage door?
Hi! My name is Mark Donovan from HomeAdditionPlus.com and today we are going to solve this problem by installing garage storage hooks into the ceiling to get these bikes up off the ground and not the way of the door.
What we want to do is measure the distance between the axles and it is approximately 4 feet, 24 inches. But 4 feet distance between the hooks should be sufficient to be able to take this bike up. The other one we want to measure is the dimensions of the handle bar, which is approximately 24 inches. So what we want to do is get this bike such as the hooks are about 16 inches off the wall and approximately 4 feet apart so that the bike would not touch the wall.
So the next thing I have done is I located the floor joists above us and I am marking 16 inches off the wall and what we will do is we will screw the first garage hanger into this location. So we have taken the garage hanger and we will just screw it through the sheetrock directly into the floor joists, really make sure that we have this hanger approximately ¾ of an inch into the floor joists itself, plus an additional ½ inch for the sheetrock.
Now that this one is installed, we will measure 48 inches from this point over to the location of the next bike hanger. So now we measure 48 inches off the center of the other garage hanger and we have secured it into the ceiling, just tightening it up here, winding it up and again, the hanger is approximately 3/4 inch into the floor joists above us plus the additional ½ inch for the drywall. You want to make sure you do that. Otherwise, you will find your bike falling down on you.
Once the hangers are installed, all you have to do is raise the bike up on the hangers and that is it! As you can see here, we have mounted a couple of bikes, got them out of the area, the doorway of the garage and that looks totally neat.
So that is it! If you have any other home improvement questions, visit us at HomeadditionPlus.com today.
