Michael: Our country retreat sets in North Texas right in the hard of tornado alley so, it’s going to have to with stand the lifetime of hot summers, thunderstorms, heavy winds and hale. The roof will take most of that punishment so were using metal roofing throughout. Stone coated steel is the primary cover, over the purchase were installing the Standing Seam Steel Roof from Custom-Built Metals. Jim Palomo was Custom-Built Representative on this project.
Jim Palomo: When it comes to storms, we can uphold to 120 miles prior wind factor. So as far as BNA higher class writing than other roof products, this is the one that will last longest.
Michael: The first step in installing this standing seam roof is to put down layers of 30 pound roofing felt. This will act as a moisture barrier; the workers begin at the lower edge of the roof and work their way up. When all roofing felt is down its time to install the Standing Seam Panels, many of the panels for our country retreat were form right on the job site. There roll of steel feeds and extruding machine, they extruded and cramps the panel form in the ray seam on the edges.
Form in the panels on sites saves time and the expensive shipping and allows the crew to custom cut the panels to whatever links they need. The installers secure the panels to the roof deck with special clips, this clips will hold the seam primarily to the roof. The clips are design to allow for the movement it comes when the panels is in panic and track with seasonal changes and temperature. As additional panels are place, the seam of one panel will cover the clips of another. This conceal clip system reduces the number of times the envelope of the roof must be punctured which reduces the chances of leaks.
When the panels are in place, the installer uses a cramping tool to ensure a weather tight connection between the metal roof panels. They installer then hammers down the ends of the panels over the middle drip edge then tightly cramps them together to ensure our leak proof connection. Waterproof cock is applied in the appropriate places and the standing seam roof is ready to protect this home from the wind, rain and heat of the sun for many years to come. Jim a lot of people talked about going in the old barn in the summer time and its really hot they think is due to the metal roof but does not really the cases is it?
Jim Palomo: No, the metal roof today reflects more heat because of the paint finish up we put on which is the kind of 500 as the ultra cool pigment that reflects 30% more heat today.
Michael: So, this coating actually reflects 30% of the suns heat that is normally going down into your shingle.
Jim Palomo Exactly so that way it will not penetrate into the home and going to the adequate cause you more utility bill.
Michael: Yeah the hotter you get up there with HBCIC is I see you’ve brought an example here. Let shoot and the standing seam roof so the heat gun wow in the 150’s only shoot the middle one and we come over here to normal composite. Wow over 250 degrees this so 100 degrees difference in the heat of your roof if you want with this one with the coating or with the ordinary.
Jim Palomo: You have mentioned something about the metal roof or the metal barns should I say, if you walked inside of the metal barn. You see the heat from the outside but when you walk inside of a metal barn your not as hot as where you walk into a storage room or barn that has asphalt on it. Your instinct by gotten into a sweat so it goes to show you that it reflect the more heat then absorbent it.
Michael: Yeah.
Jim Palomo: As we get in into our home right now we have asphalt roofs, you go up in the attic and the first thing as men do we start sweat because we can’t even think about what were doing up there. And when you go up in a little middle just like you do, that’s given into your Story-Gram the same thing. It reflects the heat so you’re not as hot inside that is what the products for.
Michael: And I know was a conventional shingle over time by absorbing all the heat, it really gets breath off start the crack and this not last the lifetime and that is not the case then with the matter we face it.
Jim Palomo: No, that is the other issue. How do you deteriorate steel? You can’t deteriorate steel and you can’t deteriorate a product like this because it made of asphalt. They loss a granules, once you lost your granules then we have the asphalt on the backing. When you do that that’s what we call an open roof, the granules are gone so, what you expecting it that’s what to have to had the granules to protect the asphalt from bubbling.
Michael: Okay.
Jim Palomo: So, we have the steel, you can’t do that without the steel if you just put as much heat as want on is going to reflect it.
Michael: And just the short time we have to set lamp on your right, the back of the shingles are the bubbling and it’s already delaminating and so this coming apart and steel. No problem so not only is going to last a lifetime but it is like your going to save money every single month that we have in on top.
Jim Palomo: By all means, there is actually roof that the beginnings of the installation probably a little more expensive but in the long run you’re never replace this roof again.
Michael: Yeah.
Jim Palomo: Because it’s steel.
Michael: And lower your totally bills every month. If you like to know more about how to get a good looking and long lasting standing seam roof for your new house, visit Custom Built website at custombuiltmetals.com.
