Sharks can see really well. They can see things that are really, really far away, and also they can see in color. Sharks also have the ability to see things in water at night. Not only do sharks see very well, they can also hear well too. Sharks can hear very low frequencies underwater. In addition to hearing and seeing very well, sharks also have another sense called electroreception. This allows a shark to feel electrical charges coming off the other animals. In fact, this helps a shark hunt for food without having to see or hear it. Sharks can also detect fish that are very deep in the sand because of this. A whale shark’s teeth are very small. In fact, they are no bigger than the head of a match. A whale shark’s mouth can open up to three and a half feet wide and despite all of the teeth that it has in its mouth, it still only eats plankton.
Another cool thing about whale sharks is that they’re very friendly. In fact, some of them even allowed divers to hold on to them so they can hitch a ride. If a great white shark or a whale shark isn’t big enough for you, well there used to be a pre-historic shark called the Megalodon or the Mega Tooth Shark. It got up to 60 feet long and could even eat whales or dolphins. Now you don’t have to worry about this shark because it became extinct three million years ago. There is actually one kind of shark that’s really cool. It’s called a Lantern Shark and it can glow in the dark.
Have you ever eaten shark before? Well if you go to Great Britain and order fish and chips, they usually give you a type of fish called a Spiny Dogfish, and a Spiny Dogfish is actually a type of shark. So people eat shark every day.
Even though sharks have all those teeth, they don’t chew their food. They just chomp off a big-O bite and swallow it whole. Most sharks have to have water moving through their gills to be able to breathe. So some sharks never stop moving from the time they were born until the time they die. They never stop moving.
So you know how fish lay hundreds to thousands of eggs at a time? Well sharks only have a few young at a time. So if they start to become extinct, it will be difficult for the sharks to repopulate. The number one predator for sharks is people. But guess what the number two is? It is other sharks. A shark will be happy eating any other species of sharks and in some cases it will even eat its own species.
Some parts of sharks are used for medical purposes. For example, the shark’s gall bladder can be used for eye cataracts or acne. And dried shark brain can be used for pain relievers.
