Now that you’ve got your floaties on, we are going to be giving you more fun facts about sharks. If you’re bleeding, then you probably would not want to go for a swim because a shark can smell a single drop of blood up to two and a half miles away and it can sense a small part of blood in a hundred million parts of water. Sharks can bite really hard. In fact, a shark’s bite can generate up to six tons of pressure per square inch. Imagine having a school bus on top of your hand. Sharks are pretty old. Archaeologists have found shark skeletons that are over 400 million years old, and the skeletons look pretty close to the sharks we see now today. Sharks are very resistant, to both diseases and cancer. In fact, scientists are trying to do research on sharks to see if they can find a cure for cancer or a prevention for cancer. Sharks can live pretty long. In fact, sharks can live up to be a hundred years old. The biggest shark is known as a Whale Shark. It can grow up to 50 feet. Some interesting things about the Whale Shark are they have 300 rows of teeth and in each row there are hundreds of tiny teeth. Also, the Whale Shark is the largest fish in the whole entire sea. You know how when you’re eating fish, you have to seek the bones out? Well, here is something interesting. Sharks don’t have any bones. Their entire skeleton is made up of cartilage. The scientific term for shark is Chondrichthyes. It comes from two Greek words, one meaning “cartilage” and the other meaning “fish”. So the scientific term for shark is Cartilage Fish. There’s a type of shark called a Dogfish Shark, but it doesn’t look anything like a dog. So, why call it that? Dogfish Sharks hunt in packs just like wild dogs. So if you thought that getting attacked by one shark is bad, imagine getting attacked by fifteen. So most people think that the largest eggs in the world are laid by Ostriches, but that’s not true. The largest eggs are actually laid by the Whale Shark. And there was even a Whale Shark egg that they found that was 14 inches long. Now, that would make a one hell of an omelet. So even though sharks are carnivorous, they can go a pretty long time without eating. On average, some sharks can go up to six weeks without eating There are more different types of sharks than you might think. Scientists have catalogued over 400 types of sharks swimming in the ocean today. For some reason, sharks don’t like bubbles. In fact, they can even be scared by the little bubbles that come from your scuba gear. The fastest shark in the world is known as the Mako Shark. It can swim up to 22 miles per hour. This helps to catch other fast fish like Marlin, Tuna, or even Sword Fish. Sharks usually attack a hundred people per year worldwide, but most of them aren’t fatal. In fact only about 10 out of those hundreds are fatal. So sharks only kill about ten people a year, but people kill about 10 million sharks each year.
