Hi this is Peter Murphy here from how to talk with confidence.com. This video is all about Interpersonal Communication. And I am going to show you some tips for success that you will find very helpful. The first tip is about listening. When you are listening to someone it is a very good idea to pause before you will start talking. If when you are listening you wait just a little bit longer before you start speaking you will often find that the other person had not quite finish. They all often speak just a little bit longer and what you are doing is you are demonstrating really good listening skills when you do this.
Secondly you are showing the person that you care enough to really listen. On a related point when you pause before speaking that silence even if it last five seconds it creates anticipation and it encourages the other person to pay attention. Second tip it is very good when you are having a conversation to take charge. It is good to lead a conversation. So what you do is you lead the conversation with energy, with emotion. You do this by speaking with enthusiasm, by smiling, by having so much energy that you become irresistible the other person cannot not follow you so you lead when emotion and then you pace this new level of interest and excitement by that I mean you simply keep it going.
Final tip is to pay attention and actually address non-verbal feedback. Let us say you are talking to someone and the person says, “That is very interesting I am really interested in that” but when you pay attention, you can say that the voice tone and the body language does not match what he said. So by paying attention to the non-verbal feedback you know it is not really interested. So how do you address that? Well you could address it directly if you know the person well, you could say well you do not sound that interested would you like to talk about something different? Or you could simply change the topic of conversation because you know the person really is not that interested.
So that is what I mean by addressing the non verbal feedback. Do not just pay attention to what the other person is saying. Watch and adjust your approach depending on the body language.
