Paul Wolfe: Hi I'm Paul Wolfe from how-to-play-bass.com, in this video article we are going to look at the interval of a minor second. So we are going to look at what the interval of a minor second, minor second actually is. How many semi tone it's comprised off. We are going to look at where a minor second is found in the major scale, and we are going to look at what it sounds like and that's going to be both ascending and descending.
Okay the distance between two notes that are minor second apart is a semi tone. And on a Piano that's two notes that are adjacent to each other. so for example, C to C sharp is a minor second, and saw so is C sharp to D that's also a minor second.
There where two places in the major scale where you can find the inch full of a minor second. This graphic in front of you is a C major scale to picked it on a piano obviously. And if you don't know C major scale is comprised of all the white notes so that's C D E F G A B and then back to C. And the two areas are two instances where you'll find in two adjacent notes they are semi tone apart. The first one is in the third to the fourth degree of the C major scale and that's E to F you see this no note between the mammographic. And the second instance where semi tone occurs in the major scale is from the seventh to the eighth degrees and that's from the notes B to C.
Minor seconds can go up or they can go down. The minor seconds that go up are described as descending minor seconds and minor seconds that go down are0 described as descending minor seconds. So if we fret C at the third fret of the A string here's what an ascending minor second sounds like. For descending minor second again we are going to start from C at the third fret of the A string, and played down one semi tone and this will give you the sound of descending minor second.
For ear training purposes a melodic motif that using ascending minor seconds is the fame from jaws. And again for ear training purposes a melodic motif that use a descending minor seconds is Stella by starlight. Which is an old Jass standard and may or may not know I put the first two notes of that melody is a descending minor second.
