Veronica: It was an act of Mother Nature that this comedian from the golf course to the
stage. Hi I’m Veronica of watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking with all in
one performer Dave Hemstad.
Is it true that you got into stand up comedy after you got hit by a lightning?
Dave: I was just a golfer and I were hit by a lightning and then it didn’t really feel the
golf as much anymore. It stinks, lightning, it stinks, if you can don’t get hit.
I’m 33 and still single so looks like I’m sitting out the first marriage, its not that
I’m against marriage it’s just that I’m for logic.
Veronica: For then how did you begin with the jokes?
Dave: I was down in Missouri where I was in a golf scholarship and then I saw a sign
that said students stand up comedy contest and I was like I always wanted to do
that, so I signed up to do that and then it went well. So then I called Dave Marry,
my buddy, and he was already comedian so I asked him how did you get into it
and he sort of help me you know I shaped my learning curve tremendously and
help me get my foot in the door. And so I then started the old fashion way, I
started doing it.
The divorce rate right now is 54 percent okay 54 percent, it’s a big number really,
and it’s an intimidating number. I’m really spook about it, let me put in a different
context for you so we can take love and romance out of the equation and think
clearly for a second. Imagine if you were standing on the side walk watching
people try to cross the street and 54 percent of them didn’t make it. How excited
would you be for your turn, really?
Veronica: Is golf really a workout?
Dave: Yeah. It can be it can be if you play it properly. I try it, I take a cart and drink but
you know some people really do get some exercise.
I’m getting older which means by the falter girls are getting younger and I can’t
date young girls, I can’t. They’re full of hope, we’re getting so tired on putting
that out. It’s hard on my heart to watch the light fade out on some body’s eyes.
Really, I’m so sorry, look young girls still think Mr. Right might be out there and
maybe I’m him.
Veronica: Now another great thing about your comedy is that you’re able to assess the
crowd and change your comedy so that they love it. How do you determine if it’s
going to be a dirty crowd or a clean crowd?
Dave: Like I can usually size up people and stereotype and like that, it’s a skill.
Veronica: Really?
Dave: Yeah like I know everything about you even though I only have talked to you I
can tell you who you are. Spunky troll up.
I date all the women because they know better, they already met Mr. Right in turn
out to be a prick. Are you usually willing to give Mr. Considerate a second chance
you know, like older women even Mr. Prompt becomes sexy, he’s not much of a
looker but it’s always on time. I really admire that.
Veronica: Well thank you very much it was great having you.
Dave: Thanks very much.
