Interview with Joshua Radin
Audra Lowe: And now it’s time for today’s Better Spotlight and you’ve heard
some of his songs in your favorite movies and even TV shows.
Joshua Radin also performed with Ellen De Generes and Portia De
Rossi’s wedding and if all that is not enough, his third album, The
Rock and the Tide is a getting a lot of big buzz. Well, Rhiannon is
finding out about this gifted song writer. She’s got all the juicy
details. Rhiannon!
Rhiannon Ally: Thanks Audra. That’s right people have likely already heard this
next guest music even if they didn’t already know it. We welcome
Josh to the show. How are you today?
Joshua Radin: I’m well. Thank you, how are you?
Rhiannon Ally: I am great. It’s good to see you.
Joshua Radin: You too.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay. So we’ve all heard your music and it’s been all over the
place, Grey's Anatomy. It’s been on House, it’s been on Scrubs,
what’s it like playing -- hearing your music on all these popular
shows?
Joshua Radin: Well, I don’t really watch much--
Rhiannon Ally: You don’t watch TV?
Joshua Radin: TV but it’s a nice you know that people hear about it through that.
It’s a great way --
Rhiannon Ally: That’s what I’m going to ask you.
Joshua Radin: It’s a great way of getting exposure and getting your music out
there around the world not just -- you know those shows air
everywhere. So I show up in Berlin and --
Rhiannon Ally: And people know you.
Joshua Radin: If you know what I mean, you can sell up shows everywhere just
because these shows air everywhere.
Rhiannon Ally: So I actually heard that you played at Ellen’s wedding a few years
back. What was that like?
Joshua Radin: It’s pretty surreal actually. It was just like in our living room.
Rhiannon Ally: Wow really?
Joshua Radin: It was like 20 people there. I’ve played at her show, this was a
couple of years ago and we were soundtracking the song and she
came up and she was crying and she was like “I want to get
married to that song” and I thought she just meant you know throw
a CD on or have like a string orchestra player or something as she
walks down the isle. But she -- like two days before she got
married, I’ve got a call. I was on tour and said “Ellen wants to fly
you in and play, she wants me to play like seven of your songs you
know for her and Portia it’s like a surprise”.
Rhiannon Ally: Wow.
Joshua Radin: So I guess, so.
Rhiannon Ally: That’s like the ultimate compliment, how cool is that?
Joshua Radin: Yeah, it was really cool. She’s so sweet. She’s doing a really good
support to me. You know, she just talks about me all the time.
Rhiannon Ally: So speaking of support, I also heard that you’ve been pictured
Scrubs and I heard you’re very good friends of one of the cast
members or former cast members.
Joshua Radin: All the cast members actually.
Rhiannon Ally: Yeah.
Joshua Radin: Yeah, they’re all really close friends of mine. Donald Faison, I was
with two nights ago he made me ribs. We watched Monday night
football. He makes amazing ribs.
Rhiannon Ally: Oh, nice to know.
Joshua Radin: You know lobster ribs.
Rhiannon Ally: Maybe we can have him on the show to make some.
Joshua Radin: Have some beers, you should. He’s amazing. He is a grill master.
Rhiannon Ally: And Zac Braff, I heard his really good.
Joshua Radin: Zac Braff and I went to college together. Bill Lawrence, the creator
of the show and his wife Krista are you know so nice. They
always, debuts like eight of my songs in their shows.
Rhiannon Ally: Oh, wow. People are loving your music and you’ve got your new
album out now. It’s actually called The Rock and the Tide. I was
listening to it this morning. It’s amazing.
Joshua Radin: Thank you so much.
Rhiannon Ally: Yeah and you’re about to go on tour.
Joshua Radin: I will listen to your record when I come out with one.
Rhiannon Ally: Trust me you do not want to hear me sing.
Joshua Radin: No?
Rhiannon Ally: That’s not pretty. But your album.
Joshua Radin: I think you should go on tour with my dad.
Rhiannon Ally: Hey, I can be back up for you. With your dad, is he not no good?
Joshua Radin: He’s tone death.
Rhiannon Ally: I’m a little tone death too. So tell us about your new album. What
can we expect on this one?
Joshua Radin: Well, it’s a little different. It’s a little bit of departure. It’s the third
full length record I’ve put out. It starts out, it’s a full band and we
were recorded it live, which I’ve never recorded that way before.
So we’re in a room, I’ve got electric. It’s a full band. Some of the
songs are a lot more upbeat than the first two records. You know
the first two records were very full key, very low fi and I loved the
way that we did that too but I just wanted to try something a little
different otherwise, it just -- if you don’t evolve artistically it’s gets
boring. And I started to play bigger rooms and festivals and bigger
stages and so I started some rock songs so that I could play full
band. And so this record has both. It’s got the really low fi,
intimate stuff as well as the upbeats. It’s kind of half and half
record.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay. Well, so your old fans will appreciate it but that one was
great. Thank you for stopping by to talk about it today.
Joshua Radin: My pleasure.
Rhiannon Ally: And it is available now and also we’ll put a link to all of his tour
dates on our website as well at bettertv.com. Audra.
Audra Lowe: Thanks a lot Rhiannon. In case you all don’t know Joshua is also a
huge hit in the UK. Good to have him here.
