Shalom, this video is about one most magnificent book ever written, the fifth book of torah, the book of the Deuteronomy. I am recording this in the end of July and that is about when every year when we start reading the fifth book of torah, this will take lot us way through end of the cycle torah reading until we celebrate the end of Sympa Torah, Deuteronomy is really stand alone book the orthodox believe that was written the same time as rest of the torah but not all not orthodox Jews and bible scholar knows that written much later reflects the significant difference with the first four books. It is written with the guys Moses giving five discourses and then too narrative about history of Israelites until then and thus reflect much of the history of Israel, it does add 70 new commandments that are not found in the first four books, it is really worth reading over and over, over and over and thus add some new thing and emphasize thing in a very important way which shape the rest of the Judaism. What are those differences and what are the things? first of all there a two names of the book we called it devari, Deuteronomy in the Greek but earlier was called mishnatorah and the repetition of the torah that name was grown out of use and bound by mymanotis when he wrote his famous quote of Jewish law when he live in 12th century. And what is special about the book of Deuteronomy, Well there are several things really profound and it is the most profoundly monotheistic text emphasizing over and over god is one and it is contains the basic formula of Judaism, the basic watch of our faith, it is the only place found in the torah which has the words (Foreign language ) hear Israel (Foreign language) our god (Foreign language) is one your unity and also stress the covenant between god and the people of Israel and suggest that is a conditional covenant on the Israelites needing to leave holy just lives look forward to a life of the Israel in the land of Israel and obviously we believe that is true because it was written while Israel actually in Israel not the text literally say that was written just before they enter the land of Israel and just before Moses died, it is humanitarianism and it is concern for the poor and needy is un match it is just over and over remind us about responsibility to others and the way to the first 4 books of the torah does not, it is centralize and localizes sacrifice to one place in the city of Jerusalem and that for shadow and even gives us a sense of the predominantly important rule of prayer and study. It is very intellectual book and that continue to remind us to study the torah into understand it is implications.
It has some core principles and rituals that are clearly Judaism and it will be impossible to conceive Judaism with out this besides shmad has second recitation of the ten commandments and add difference thing in the ten commandments most notably it gives us besides the commandment to remember the Sabbath that exodus it tells us to guard an keep the Shabbat which gives us the whole bases rules about resting on Shabbat and has for example the same grace after meal for (foreign language) then when you leave you are satisfied you should bless your lord your God and has the commandment for mezuzah into filling. In the first period after we recite liturgically twice a day after the shmad and tell us to love God with all our hearts with all our might, to teach our children diligently, to put mezuzah in out door post, to wet feeling in our arms and our foreheads, reminds us about giving charity to the poor and has a very important teleological and ethical bases which is quote extensively by mymanotis and it introduction to the mission of torah, it is impossible to over state the significant that the Deuteronomy has had for Judaism and I urge you to read it. For Jews my best suggestion is you keep up with weekly torah reading preferably by being synagogue and hearing them chanted but you can also find them in the Jewish calendar, we just finish the first section of the Deuteronomy know you know go on to the edkanan to this next week and read it over and over, over and over, it is a very important beautiful book inspire by God and written by ancestor to shape Judaism.
