One of the major differences between Illustrator and PhotoShop is the types of files that you create and the types of files that you can edit with those programs. Illustrator is designed to work with line-base artwork, with drawing basically whereas PhotoShop is designed to work with pixel based artworks which is photographs, paintings, that sort of thing.
What we are going to do now is open two Illustrator files: one is sort of a typical Illustrator file, it is line-based artwork. The other while in the Illustrator file contains pixel-based objects. You can place pixel-based images in an Illustrator file. It just is not the ideal software for him to use to actually edit those types of files. So what I am going to do is I am going over to the open link in the welcome screen. I am going to click on desktop, I am going to double-click on project files, double-click on part one, double-click on lesson one, click one time on yellow stone map, and then I am going to Ctrl click or Command click on a Macintosh. So they are both yellow stone map and your pictures are selected and then I will click the open button. Once, I have both file open, I will go to the Window menu and I will choose tile that arranges the two windows side by side. I am also going to maneuver the two images a little bit so that we can see them better. While I am going to do this is I am going to click on the hand tool and then press and drag to move that over, click to highlight that window and then press and drag to move that over. And then I am going to click back on my selection. I think it is just a good habit to get in to especially if you are fairly new to Illustrator, to always go back to the selection arrow just to make sure you do not accidentally do something that you are not prepared for.
The next thing we are going to do is zoom in a little bit on each of these two images. You do that with the zoom tool which is the magnifying glass tool and click on the yellow stone map to make that active and just a couple of clicks are going to zoom you in and give you a much better idea of the type of file that we work with. You can see that it has very clean lines whereas if we go over to Yosemite pictures, click a couple of times, you are going to start to see the pixels, the actual little building blocks that make up this image. One of the biggest advantages of using Illustrator over PhotoShop for certain types of images line-based artwork is that with Illustrator, you can enlarge your images, you can manipulate your images without any lose of quality. If I continue zooming in, you are going to see that no matter how much we zoom in, the files do not degrade in quality at all. If we look at the top of the document window, you can see the word currently at 6400% which is the maximum zoom in Illustrator which is why also if you look at the cursor, you will notice that there is no longer plus sign inside of it, indicating that we cannot zoom in anymore.
Now, if we move over to the flower file and we zoom in to 6400% what you were going to see is basically going to be a big old mess. Here, you got a really good indication of the difference between pixels based images and vector based images. Pixel based images are a little easier to capture, a little easier to create, not necessarily easier to work with but generally easier to capture and create but you just do not have the flexibility of zooming in, manipulating, enlarging or anything like that. I am going to zoom back out on both of them, what I am going to do is I am going to double-click on the hand tool which is the short cut to get to what is called fit in window mode, I am going to do the same thing over here for the yellow stone map. Just so we are back where we started from.
