The next thing we want to talk about is one of the new features of Illustrator CS3, it is not as Flash as some of the new feature but I think it is really handy and that is something called the welcome screen. What I am going to do now is I am going to close this two documents just by clicking the close box in the upper right hand corner. I am not going to save changes. On the Macintosh, it will be on the upper left hand corner and again do not save changes.
The welcome screen pops up anytime you do not have other documents open so when you first open Illustrator or anytime you do what we have just done. You close all open documents. The welcome screen is divided into three different areas, basically: on the left hand side it has existing documents. It lets you open recent, existing documents. On the right hand side, it lets you create new documents and then down at the bottom are some additional features, Getting Started, New Features of CS3 and some additional resources. There is also on the far lower left hand corner, check box it says “Do Not Show Again”, this check box right here, if you click it, you will never see this welcome screen unless you specifically choose to, unless you go the help menu and in the help menu, you choose welcome screen that will bring up back up. We do not need to do that because we already have it up but I would recommend that you do not click this check box, this is sort of a good home base to start from when you are working with documents.
Now, we have got some documents already open, the Illustrator map, couple different version of the Yosemite pictures. Whenever you have documents that are stored in different locations with the same name or different version possibly, it will be listed more than one time. And there is also an open link that you can click on to get a standard open dialogue box. It is the exact same thing, it is going up to the file menu choosing the open command.
Over on the right hand side, is create new section. This lets you create new documents and it looks like you have got a bunch of already existing documents, very similar to the way we have opened recent file listed on the left hand side. But these are actually different profiles for different types of documents. Printed documents, document that are going to be published on the web, document for mobile, devices and video and film documents. Because of Illustrator’s ability to create line-based artwork and because it works really well with text, Illustrator actually use to create a lot of the titles and titling effects that you see in movies, video and TV. You also can create some basic CMYK documents and RGB documents. CMYK is a color space, the CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black and that is the color space that is used for ink-based document, basically, anything that is going to be printed in the real world. RGB stands for red, green and blue and that is a light-based color scheme. And that is anything that is going to be output to your monitor or to a video projector or something like that. You can also create new documents based on the template by clicking the template link.
We are going to start by clicking on the print document link which takes us to the new dialogue box that you see right now. At the top, just a textbox where you could type in whatever you want to call the document. Let us just call ours test, underneath that you can choose a new document profile. The new documents profiles listed here should look very familiar. They are the exact same links that we saw in the welcome screen. I am going to click again here to get rid of that. The size of the paper that you are going to be printing to is letter, which is the default for print. But again, there is a pop-up menu where you can choose different sizes as well specify the unit of measurements. In this case, it is point but you can choose picas which are 12 points, inches, millimeters, centimeters or pixels.
If you are not familiar with some of these terms, there are 72 points to an inch, it is a standard measurement schem
