Host: Age five and six, the permanent teeth come in, and it is something like difference between it's going to be right-handed or left-handed at this age.
Henry Joseph Hasson: Yeah, for sure, a one year older, even up to two years of age, you should have noticed any difference, a lot parents think that they can tell if the child is righty or lefty at that age. But it is really after that at three, four, five years of age that you start noticing, and they start -- now they are going to start coloring, they are going to start writing and learning some letters and you will notice and this is a way you will be able to help, they are righty or lefty.
Some parents try to change them from being lefty because for whatever social reasons, choosing is not a good idea, it is always better to just let them be the way they are.
Host: It's good because I am not lefty, they sort of like understand what are the rules and regulations a little bit better, is that true?
Henry Joseph Hasson: Yeah, and at this point they should really start understanding between right and wrong. They may make mistakes the first time of course, but the proper thing for parents is really show them and teach them by this phenomenon properly and that's how a child learn, then it's really the thing they starting, they are almost ready for elementary school and they are almost ready to start living in a real social environment, in a society and they have to start learning these things from now or else it gets much more difficult as they get older.
Host: I want to please you, so positive reinforcement works. They want to see you saying, you did a good job, is that true?
Henry Joseph Hasson: Oh yeah, I mean for a child, just telling them you are a good kid, you did something well, sometimes even giving them a prize, but that is not always necessary. They will be very happy and that will reinforce it. A lot of parents know how to train a pet very well, kids aren't all that different, not themselves children. But there really it's just a matter of training. It's a matter of doing the same thing again and again and eventually learning and a lot times, for example negative reinforcement, do something wrong, you can just be ignoring them or you just not laughing at them or you just it doesn't even always have to be a punishment because the child always is looking for your attention and if you just don't give them attention that's a negative reinforcement and they will stop doing those activities.
Host: You know about opposites?
Henry Joseph Hasson: Sure.
Host: Vocabulary should be probably of 2,500 words, is that true?
Henry Joseph Hasson: Yeah, at this point, they should really be developing things like vocabulary, they should really be understanding a lot of things that you are telling them and they should be able to carry on a good level of conversation.
Host: They don't just use penny, they may know what the true worth is of penny and a nickel or a quarter.
Henry Joseph Hasson: Yes, they are starting to, this is also a good time to start showing the value of the things cost and it's a hard thing to really understand money as it's a abstract issue, but somewhere we can start teaching them for sure.
