Is There a Cold Vaccine?

Emily: Hi! I am Emily from Puyallap. My question is why isn’t there a cold vaccine like there is a flu vaccine? Mark Fendrich: Emily that's a great question. We’d all love to have a preventive intervention for the common cold as we do for the flu as well as many other infectious diseases. It turns out that the cold is caused by many, many different types of viruses, while influenza or the real medical term for flu is caused by just a few strains of a specific virus. So while we have tried very hard to identify and create vaccines against specific viruses that cause the cold, it's very unlikely that we will ever have enough effective vaccines that will actually reduce your likelihood from getting humans most common disease.
