In this video lesson, I want to talk about some jazz drum beats. Now all of these exercises are based on the triplet feel. One, triplet two, triplet three, triplet four, triplet, one, triplet two, triplet three, triplet four, triplet.
Now if you look at the exercise provided. This is a pretty cool looking beat because you’ll notice it looks consistent. You can look at the beat close. The bass drum is on the one on the lit of one, on the three and the lit of three. The snare drum is on the two and the lit of two, the four and the lit of four. Is it pretty cool sounding little groove? Let me demonstrate this for you.
(Demonstration)
Okay, let’s take a look at exercise number two. This is pretty cool because if you look close the bass drum is on all of the lits. One triplet, two triplet, three triplet, four triplet. And keep in mind you’re still playing the basic jazz right pattern and then right symbol. I had explained two and four with the left foot. The snare drum is simply on beats two and four. That’s the easy part. Let’s check out this beat.
(Demonstration)
Now, beat number three is actually quite easy because there’s no bass drum, isn’t it? So if you look close when you’re playing the basic jazz right pattern I had two and four if you look close we’ve got two little snare drums on the trip and the lit of beat three. One triplet, two triplet, three triplet, four triplet. That’s all we have to add to the basic jazz rhythm. Watch this.
(Demonstration)
Exercise number four is elaboration of exercise number three. If you look close to the sheet music you’ll notice that we’re still playing the basic jazz right pattern. I have some two and four with the foot. Snare hand is playing on the triplet of beat one and triplet of beat three. This one is fun. Check this out.
(Demonstration)
Now you probably noticed that I’ve been demonstrating all these exercise to a 3:16 which I highly suggest. I’ve been playing them with 100 beat per minute. It’s completely up to you where you’d like to practice them. You can start slower 60, 70, 80 if you feel comfortable you can go or you can faster that hum. If you look at exercise number five you’ll notice this is a pretty cool little beat.
We’ve got the basic jazz right pattern. I had two and four. The snare is playing the first two triplets of beat one. One trip, also the first two triplets of beat three, three trip. Now if you look at the bass drum, the bass drum is being played on the last triplet of beat one. One triplet, also the last triplet of beat three, three triplet.
This become really fun, a little bit challenging to practice. So be patient. Here is this one sounds?
(Demonstration)
Okay, here we are for exercise number six. So be sure to check out the sheet music that is provided with these exercises. The snare drum is on the last triplet of beat one and on the last two triplets of beat two. It’s also on beat four. There’s only bass drum in the bar. Bass drum is on the let of three. Challenging but interesting beat to play, allow me to demonstrate this one for you.
