Hi, my name is Mike Michalkow and welcome to the jazz drumming section of FreeDrumLessons.com. I’d like to discuss with you in this portion how to create a basic jazz pattern on the right cymbal, on the hi-hat, but we’re also going to talk about is some basic comping if you haven’t heard that word before we’ll discuss what that is. We’ll do some jazz fills. We’re even going to play with some brushes.
Now, one thing to keep in mind when you are practicing jazz you need to develop a triplet fills unlike in eighth note rock fill or 16th note rock fill. You need to learn how to count triplets. If you’re not sure, here’s how you do it, just groups of three notes per quarter note. One triplet, okay a whole entire bar one triplet, two triplet, three triplet, four triplet.
Now, if you decide to practice this with your metronome I would suggest highly to either put the quarter note on or sub-divide the triplet underneath, so you can make sure that you’re lining up the proper notes on the cymbal, on the snare drum, on the bass drum and on the hi-hat. Be sure to check out the exercises in the sheet music provided.
