Shalom! Building your Jewish Library Volume III
I want to recommend three more books to you. Now my first video on building your library, I recommended a Hamish, the synagogue bible that we use that has just the Torah and perpetic portion. But every Jewish house should have a full Hebrew Bible, that Christians call the Old Testament but it is the Hebrew Bible. And you need a Hebrew bible, not an Old Testament because we have different divisions than Christians do and our books are ordered a little bit differently.
And the best single volume out I think, well, English Edition is called The Jewish Study Bible, published by the Jewish Publications society, it is also says Tanakh underneath, which are the initials of the Hebrew Bible, T for Torah, Nun for Nevine prophets and kh for Ketuvim, the writings. And at the bottom, it says Oxford Press, and has the whole Bible in English, with good translation, JPS translation, plus terrific notes on the sides, that gives you great insight into the text. So that is definitely a book you should have in your house.
And then another book by Rabbi Louie Jacobs, I recommended two of them, in my first video, I am not even sure this is in print, but if it is, you should get it, “What does Judaism Say About”. It is really one page or so and every kind of subject you can imagine, from abortion, to ESP, to transplants, vegetarianism, polygamy, nuclear warfare, monasticism, Marxism, just a terrific one volume book.
And then the final book on this video that I mentioned is a book called Voices of Wisdom by Francine Klagsbrun, a book to have. Voices of Wisdom, you can see there Voices of Wisdom Francine Klagsbrun, and the reason why it is so good is it gives you texts, Jewish ideas and Ethics for everyday living. It is all should you take a subject like you and yourself, or relating to others, love, sex and marriage, family relationships, health and medicine, study, scholarship and supervision, work for often philanthropy. It gives you a little, brief, classic texts just a paragraph long each that you can read from like a minute about Jewish ideas. Anyway, that was our three books that I think would really be good in building your Jewish library.
