Shalom, Now would you ever say, the devil maybe do it. Do we believe the devil? The Hebrew bible has the Satan, Satan, which in mythology is the devil, but what do we mean about that and we do believe and literally be true. It is doubtful if Jews ever took this references literally, in Judaism, saving is a mythological figure of the evil forces in the world, the times to identify is the tempt or the evil impulse which makes people look at their kind of inner darker side but they had notion too that is not never too deeply routed because Judaism teaches that God as the creator of everything. Now the book of Job is the probably best example in the bible where saving is used as an adversary, tempting Job in ruling Job’s life.
Really the best that God is a test, but the other Rabbis are debating whether Job and Zach was a real story or an allegory and their conclusion basically was, that is a product of imagination of some of our ancestors, a parable or an allegory.
Often times, saving is really referred to as the evil impulse within us, the Rabbi said we all have two parts, we have the inti aytov, the good inclination that is God like and then we have the inti arra which is necessarily bad, it is the part of us that is a mammalian, that loves the eat and drink and have territory and all the other things that mammals do. The problem is that it can lead us astray and so the hope purpose of the mitsevel really is the balance of the eche ratov which can also be excessive.
We can be denying of the pleasures of life and the echa hara, but to an extent that we see the Satan as an evil tempter. Sometimes too, Satan is identified as the agent of death in Jewish tradition, leading souls astray, bringing accusations against people but always within the domain of God. It is really interesting that Judaism chose this element of popular folklore to help human beings make points to help us understand more about the world but in the main, we do not believe that there is name that was running around there causing us to do bad things, we believe in free choice that we take consequences for our action, that we are void in punishments for what we do. We always have to be aware of the source of demons that is asking us, trying to convince us to do bad.
In fact, there is a brand new study released recently which shows that often during a day when we had pettily in a petty manner, it is because we have our subconscious operating full force during the day, not just at night and that can lead us astray and therefore we need to constantly bellow against that, there would be the Satan in the world. When we say Satan made me do it, we really say we did it, let us take responsibility for it.
