Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Doctor File Finder and welcome to your Butterscotch.com tutorial on how to clean your Mac. Now just like its PC counterpart, the Mac accumulates junk in the form of cache files, log files, temporary files, language files and so on. So I was looking around for a program to help me with that and I found CleanMyMac which shows a very good job.
I have here on my desktop. I have a link to the download in my show notes. Click here on preferences so you can see that you can indicate what language files you want to keep. Since I don’t speak any of these other languages, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese and so on I’m looking and have them removed. Over here by default enable, I enabled all of them, caches, system caches and so on.
CleanMyMac is an option where you can overwrite files several times to do a secure erase and under updates you can have a check every week, every day or have it unchecked. I don’t think that’s a good idea and I have it check on startup. So we go to scan. I like the fact here that it shows last time, it was scanned was April 8th, that the month we covered was 1433 megabytes so this is 1.4 gigabytes. It shows what version that is registered to me and the date it was last updated.
So now I have these things checked. I click scan. I shouldn’t find too much because I just cleaned recently. It’s like when you clean the house, you don’t usually find much dust if you clean the day after you dusted. We just found about 25 megabytes here on a little bit under log files. Scans relatively quickly, you know the done here if you want you can stop the scan or if something comes up you can always pause the scan and then resume it later.
Our scan is finished. I’ll clean all these items so I said remove and we’re going to authenticate which means I want to click on my username and password and see the activity here. It’s clean so it shows that I recovered 29 megabytes and that it gives my total recovered right here. So this is CleanMyMac, it works very well and that’s all there is to it.
