Zelena Montminy: Big buns are an easy updo that requires little more than a hair tie and a brush. To recreate the shinions on the red carpet, we’ve asked celebrity stylist Ken Paves to show us his version of Eva Longoria and Victoria Beckham’s romantic low bun.
Ken Paves: So, I’ll demonstrate for you how to create the effortlessly chic buns, something I’ve created for Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria. The thing I love about is it works during the day. It even works on the red carpet. So, this should take you 15 to 20 minutes or less. So, to create this look, make sure you have the right tools.
Start with a one-inch curling iron. A mixed bristle flat brush, a little bit of hairspray, shine serum, some bobby pins, a hooked rubber band and if you need it, a little extra hair.
So, I’m going to create this look on my very good friend Andrea and co-stylist here at the salon. To create step one, you want to work on of your naturally air dried hair. And to create the texture, I’m going to use a one-inch barrel curling iron. So, I like to take random sections, twist them forward, wrap them around the iron just to create a really loose casual texture, very natural looking. So, follow this through until you complete the head.
It’s really key to get the front pieces. This is what you’re going to see the most of when the hair’s pulled back in a shinion. So, step two is all about enhancing this texture. I like to start with a little bit with shine serum, two or three pumps in your hands. Wipe it through like this. And then spread it evenly from the mid-shaft out. So, an optional step, if you want to add a little extra volume or a little extra length to create your shinion, try the new 20-inch stylable hairdo extension, easy to apply.
Start with the horseshoe shape leaving the crown of your hair up. You’re going to start their seven-pressure sensitive clips around on the inside. I start with the middle one. Press it against the scalp into the hair and snap closed. So, I just let your hair down over top of the extension and you’re ready to go.

Ken Paves: So, now, you want to pull your hair back in place and secure it with a hooked rubber band. And remember, this is the same step with or without the added hair. And I like to always pull the hair up keeping in mind the angle of a woman’s face. Everybody looks great when the hair kind of comes up and away from the jaw line. Pull your hair into place and secure it with a hook elastic.
I used the brush just to brush through the hair to give a little bit of extra thickness and value. I like to use amazing Pearson brush. It’s a mixed bristle bore and nylon brush and a flat brush. If you don’t like that, there’re other brushes that you can find at your local beauty supply store. Now, take your hair and just wrap it around the base of the ponytail, very effortless looking and secure with a couple of bobby pins. You won’t need many but you want to take the bobby pins, put them into the hair going forward against the scalp and then push them back.
This really gives you a lot of extra security. So, step five, when you’re happy with you look, just secure it in place with a little bit of extra firm hold hairspray. What I’ve done here is I’ve actually incorporated the two looks that I’ve created for Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria. So, it’s still under 20 minutes. That’s how we do it at Bella Sugar Style.
