The University of Louisville and Kentucky University rivalry strengthen the fact that the schools are both located in the state of Kentucky. However, that’s not where the dram and the rivalry end. Recently, Rick Pitino added fire to the rivalry when in 2001 he accepted the head-coaching job at the University of Louisville. From 1989 to 1997, Pitino had been at the home of the Kentucky program, however he is now known to the many UK faithful as “Trader Rick.”
The rivalry traces the truths to the early 20th century as the two schools battled out nine times in the decade. However, even despite their proximity, the two schools only competed three times between 1922 and 1983. The rivalry was renewed in full force on March 26, 1983. In their first game against each other over 20 years, the teams met up in the elite eight round of the NCAA tournament with Louisville outlasting the Wildcats in overtimes.
Since then, the teams have played much more regularly. The Kentucky Wildcats hold the upper hand with 26 to 13 records all time over the Cardinals as of 2008. The Wildcats have participated in 13 NCAA final forces and have won seven championships placing them second behind UCLA in terms of championships won. While not a successful, Louisville has still made it to eight final fours winning two championships, both stats that ranked them amongst the Great College Basketball Programs.
