Kid Koala Talks Turntablism
Rebecca Brayton: Manipulating music in audio for an audience is just another form of musical expression. Hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re speaking with DJ Kid Koala about his art and how he gets in his own.
Eric San: It’s kind of culture of the shy really about just lock yourself in a room just learning the craft and getting to that point where you might have a melody in your head and you might have just one note on that record. But you can vent that one note into that melody. In that, there’s expression.
Rebecca Brayton: What is turntablism to you?
Eric San: In fact that is called turntablism now is kind of weird because what does mean? It sounds like a weird religion to me. You don’t have to look that deeply into it. It’s just a mode of expression to people. Some people they gravitate towards guitars or playing wine glasses or spoons or writing. Guys like me I was always like this is it this is how I can express myself. We feel it’s like knobs and fetters and you’re like somewhere in here I can find my voice.
Rebecca Brayton: What is the most difficult thing for you to pull off?
Eric San: The most difficult thing which shouldn’t be the most difficult things inside. It is just really like clearing your head really getting in that moment, getting into the zone. Athletes call it the zone, writers call it the zone, and musicians call it zone. Scratch DJ’s call it the zone like sometimes you just have to like stop thinking about what you’re doing and that let what you’ve practiced so that happens. When that’s there time stand still.
It happens on stage sometimes, happens in the studio when you’re working sometimes but when you capture those moments they’re very special.
Rebecca Brayton; Now what about your other artistic endeavors?
Eric San: If I have like three kind simultaneous semi professions, one’s in the kind like graphic nobles and just telling stories that way others like the music side obviously and the third is like through touring. If I had like 10 tours over my career and I would want to say I just did the same tour. Every time we try to put together show or curetted tour like designs some sort of event to happen.
You know on stage we try to make it new and exciting for us and hopefully that translate to the crowd too. Obviously, we just cut off the slow which was the loudest tour ever. My ears are still ringing that was like full on rock out jump like a turntable is going to move in and that was fun.
To me it’s just about just doing what’s next and what’s keeps you motivated and excited about getting up in the morning because I don’t know what that is yet. Right now I know what it is for today.
Rebecca Brayton: Well thank you very much.
Eric San: Cool thank you.
