It's an important lesson for children to learn how to care for their planet, and engaging books are a great place to start. I am here at Park Road Books in Charlotte, to tell you about a field of my favorites that you may want to put on your holiday list this year.
First step is a Dr Seuss classic that warn that the very environmental issues we face today, even though it was published more than 30 years ago. It's called the Lorax and it's about a businessman named Once-ler who cuts down the trees to feed his factory. But Lorax is a creature who lives in the woods and tries to persuade Once-ler to stop, but Once-ler doesn't listen and in the end, they are forced to spare and the creatures have all left. It's a lesson, even adults could learn a lot from.
Here are several other good ones. 50 Ways To Save The Ocean by David Helvarg is for the older child on your list. A Child's Introduction To The Environment by Michael Driscoll and his father professor Dennis Driscoll is another great book. It includes experiments and activities and stickers that even has a reusable lunch sack to help educate your children about protecting the air, earth, and sea around us.
And lots of us small children who love the American products. Julie And The Eagles by Megan McDonald and Robert Hunt is the right book for them. It's a story of two girls who try to save bald eagles. This book would be great to couple with a trip to the Carolina Raptor Center.
You can do your part by teaching the children in your life about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling, because that's what the Lorax says, unless someone like you cares a whole of a lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.
