Speaker: This is a guide to kids kitchen safety. So the very first thing you want to do with your child is talk to them about the kitchen, and tell them that we have to be really careful in the kitchen, and it's always, always, always necessary to have an adult with you whenever you are doing anything in the kitchen.
Now, just a few pointers. You want to make sure that you have short sleeves or you have short sleeves, because you don't want anything to get caught on anything, on anything hot. It's also good to keep yourself between your child and the hot stuff, and what I usually do is when I am cooking the hot stuff, I take plastic, stuff like this, plastic cups and plates, and put them in here, and I ask Una, if Una will wash them for me. So that's what keeps her busy and keeps her active, while I am doing stuff with the hot stuff.
Another thing too is, it's not a good idea to leave the pots and pans with the handle out in the front, because a kid could easily hit that. So it's best to move them to the back burner, and keep this handle in a place where the child couldn't knock into it and knock it over. To talk to them about, when something bubbles, what does it mean. When it bubbles, it means its really, really, really hot, and you can get really, really, really hurt if you were to touch that.
Why do we sing the ABCs when we wash our hands? Why do we do that?
Una: I don't know.
Speaker: Well, I will tell you why we do it. We sing the ABCs because we want to make sure that Una washes her hands for about a minute. It's really important to let that soap really get in there, and I guess kill all the germs that are on your hands. So you don't want to wash your hands really fast, you want to wet your hands, you want to soap them up, turn off the water, and then sing the ABC song, get the ABC song all the away through. When the ABC song is over, you can rinse your hands and use a paper towel to dry them off, and then throw it in the trash.
