Jennifer Matthews: They walk. They run. They dance. Woman today are more active than ever. Take Kristine Rossof. She walks about two miles a day at her job as a nurse administrator. But it wasn't always this easy.
Kristine Rossof: I was limping a lot.
Jennifer Matthews: For eight years, a painful knee slowed Kristine down until she opted for knee replacement surgery.
Kristine Rossof: Immediately I could get out of bed and take a step and walk. So that was significant and huge.
Jennifer Matthews: Kristine received a new implant called The Zimmer Gender Solutions High-Flex Knee. It was recently approved by the FDA and it's made specifically for women. Unlike older implants, designed more with a man's anatomy in mind, these implants are narrow and thin. They also allow for a woman's wider pelvis.
Aaron Rosenberg: It's just a step that allows us to fit the woman patient better. It's like wearing a pair of pants that fit you well as opposed to one that you sort of have to adjust yourself to because they don't really fit in the right places.
Jennifer Matthews: Rosenberg is one of 13 doctors who developed the implant. It's put it in place through a simple surgical procedure with a small incision. Dr. Rosenberg says a better fit means greater flexibility, less pain, and a quicker recovery. Four weeks after surgery, Kristine is ready to reclaim her active lifestyle.
Kristine Rossof: I'm looking forward to getting back to travel and back to some of the things I like doing.
