Okay, some serious stuff today, divorce. Yeah, that. It happens to good people and no one plans for it. In fact, did you know that 43% of all marriages end within the first 15 years? 43% and when that happens, people are usually so emotionally upset they don’t know what to do or where to begin.
So, if you’re thinking about filing for divorce and doing it without a lawyer, you should definitely know your rights. I’m Stefanie Schaeffer and this is Know Your Right’s T.V.
To file for divorce by yourself, here’s what you’ll need to do. First, get your business and personal paperwork together before filing. This is important but often overlooked step by most divorce petitioners. These should include confirmation of all assets and debts. This means account numbers, monthly statements, titles to real property, mortgage or deed agreements, lease agreements, and retirement paperwork.
Second, when you file divorce paperwork, you must specify material possessions. In other words, who gets what? This is then put into the divorce decree. If you don’t and there’s a dispute later on you’ll have no standing.
Third, if you have children, you’ll need to negotiate child custody arrangements and child support payments if any.
Fourth, you’ll need to negotiate alimony with your spouse as well. There’s a strict requirements to follow when filing divorce paperwork. Failure to follow those rules may mean that the court could reject your divorce petition.
