LASIK Eye Surgery From Start to Finish
Jessica: Hi, I am Jessica. I am having LASIK surgery performed today
by Dr. Schwartz and I wanted to bring you along so you could
participate in my experience.
Before the surgery my vision is, I believe I have a -3.5
prescription in one eye and -3 in the other. So it’s pretty
average from what they tell me, but I am nearsighted so seeing
distance is difficult for me.
Right now, I am feeling a little bit nervous but excited at the
same time. I have heard lots of good things about LASIK and
I’ll just be really excited to be able to see without glasses or
contacts.
Dr. Jay Schwartz: Hi, I am Dr. Jay Schwartz. LASIK is a type of eye surgery to
correct for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism. It can
also be used to help correct for patients who want to get rid of
reading glasses.
So the LASIK procedure itself is done nowadays with the most
modern technology, using all laser technology creating a flap,
lasering every shape in the surface of the eye and then
repositioning that flap back on to the surface of the eye.
I am going to lift you up here, get you are lined up with the
machine. It is going to make the flap. You just hold real still.
You are doing great. Hold still. You are doing great. Just
creating the flap right now – nice job.
The patients, when they come to my office for a LASIK
procedure are here for approximately an hour and a half. Often
times we are re-testing things that we saw on the first day just
to be certain that everything is perfect before we proceed with
the LASIK. The surgery, the procedure itself lasts
approximately 8 to 10 minutes. So it’s actually fairly quick.
A lot of the time spent here is preparatory time and then of
course checking on the patients after the procedure to make
sure they are doing well and they are feeling good before they
leave to go home.
Go ahead and put your chin there. Excellent! They’re perfect –
absolutely perfect! Get some rest, we will see you tomorrow.
