LDL and HDL Cholesterol

Ravi Shankar: Hi! My name is Ravi Shankar, and I am from Auckland. My question to you doctor about cholesterol is, they say there are two kinds of cholesterol, one is HDL and LDL, which one of these is beneficial, which one is harmful?

Leslie Cho: Hi Ravi! Good cholesterol is called HDL and the bad cholesterol is called an LDL. HDL is important because it goes around your body and vacuums out cholesterol plaque from your blood vessel. A good level of HDL is above 55. Now for a man, we often considerate it okay if your good cholesterol level is above 40, and for a woman it should ideally be above 55. But for both genders it would be beneficial the higher HDL level you have.
