Hello. Today we have the pleasure of introducing you one tasty budget LG phone. Please meet the Cookie also known as the KP 500. It is aimed at the common consumer which seeks for an easy to use phone with a modern appearance and a large touch screen without too many additional features. The Cookie slightly resembles the high end Renoir but looks much more unpretentious. It is thoroughly made of plastic which is pleasant to touch and gives a kind of rubber feeling. In addition, it is thin and very light just about 3.14 ounces which makes it handy to bear in ones pocket.
The manufacturer boast that the large three inch touch screen with a resolution of 240 by 400 pixels and 262000 colours uses the latest technology which improves on the sensitivity. And that’s indeed true besides every touch is accompanied by a vibration and the sound and the intensity of both can be adjusted. In artificial light conditions everything seems clear but when it gets exposed to the sun you have to look at it directly because the slightest angle turns it into a mirror.
As a whole however we are really impressed by the screen. Below it there are three easy to press buttons similar to the ones within the Renoir. The telescopic stylus is on the lower right end of the body and is inserted horizontally. The interface is rather fresh and when compared to previous models, seems to have gone through a slight evolution. But it is still easy to get used to even if you are totally inexperience user. Again we have widgets on the home screen which are set in here but we couldn’t find an option to add more. Those that are active on the home screen can be easily arranged you only need to shake the phone a bit. Now if you slide your finger vertically across the whole screen, you find yourself in a totally new home screen were you can place you nine quick dial contacts which have been stored in your phonebook for advance.
In the phone book itself you can save up to 1000 contacts with multiple numbers and for each one you also have options for a personal photo id, ringtone, birth date, email and some other details. The functionality of the organizer will thoroughly satisfy the needs of the common user who doesn’t need some special business features. You have a calendar with few view types to do notes and events, alarms, a world clock with a nice interface, unit converter and also very nice calculator.
The KP 500 is capable of sending and receiving SMS, MMS and email messages. For the purpose, you can input text by using three of the possible ways. The first one is standard and very well known numeric keypad. The second is handwriting recognition and most probably you need some time in order to get used to it. The last one offers a full QWERTY keyboard, the keys of which look small on the three inch display.
In the beginning we really made a lot of mistakes but the T9 predictive input manages to correct them. This turned out to be the fastest way of writing. If you want to use the Internet have in mind that the Cookie does not support 3G and you have to rely only in edge speed which is rather slow for today’s standards. The browser visualizes the pages flawlessly but similar to the Renoir, navigating around the contents in reaching exactly what you want can be a difficult task. Besides, zooming in and out by holding your finger on the screen is rather illogical and unhandy. And when using the slider, you will experience some significant delay. We are unhappy with this browser again.
The LG Cookie isn’t pretending to be really good when it comes of multimedia. To tell you the truth, it even surprises pleasantly with its music capabilities. Its player offers a design featured like the one in the Renoir and the sound quality to your headphones from the box is good over the average and their loudness is enough in order to overpower the sound of the cars around you.
The loudspeaker is indeed loud and we were even a bit surprised at first.
The three megapixel camera without a flash offers some average quality images in natural light though there is a slight presence of noise and sometimes the colours turn out to unrealistic. In artificial light the situation is bad but we didn’t expect something else. You can capture videos with the resolution of 320 by 240 pixels which are not suitable for the big screen but you can still upload them to YouTube. At vast you can use the camera in order to show where you have been. In this connection the Cookie can also play videos.
Unfortunately we could watch only H263 coded once and we missed those which are H264 codecs which deliver much better quality. Our final opinion of the LG Cookie is very high and has left as with a positive impression it offers a large screen, its thin and wide, performs fairly well and offers good sound quality when listening to music as well as during a call. Last but not least, it comes with at an affordable price. We really think that these phones will suite the common user well.
