Dr. Judi: So, one of the treatment in the last few years that I have been very happy with is Laser Treatment for Acne and it's a very important thing because everybody has acne; men have acne, women have acne, young have acne, not so young have acne, every race have acne and people don't like to walk on with pimples on their face. The topical treatment and the oral antibiotic, the pills and Accutane only go so far and lot of people are very concerned about taking them and so I found a way to treat acne in the last three years with the lasers, that's really gives people a long-term relief and we treat the cyst and they don't come back.
That is the worst type to deal with is cystic acne, you get these big red painful bumps right and what the problem is that they often leave very noticeable scars over the time; they don't go away by themselves, they have to do with hormones and it's nothing that you are doing wrong, it's just how your skin is and how your hormones are stimulating your body to make too much oil and clog up the pores. I think it's very important to treat this as early possible. Do not have those scars and then have to try to treat them years and years on the line. The treatment is basically not very time consuming and it doesn't hurt. It feels like somebody is snipping a rubber band against your skin, just little pinchy kind of a thing and what it is, it’s a light that penetrates the skin without hurting the skin it's not the radiation, it's not dangerous and it doesn't cause any unwanted side effects But what it does because of the color that this particular laser can see, it targets the red color in the cyst on the skin and over the time the blood vessels that are red also see this cannot come back anymore. So, no blood vessels, no nutrition, no cyst, this is how it goes away.
Now I am going to go a little bit faster and just keep your eyes closed and you let me know if you need a break and all these little spots that are now red are going to turn purplish and in about 4, 5, 6 days purple will fade out and hopefully a lot of these spots will not come back and we are going to repeat this treatment month after a month about four times or so. Are you still alive Nicholas?
Nicholas: Yeah.
Dr. Judi: Okay. All these are bumps that have red color, they will pick under laser energy and hopefully have all the little blood vessels that feed them disappears and that way they won't come back; that's what you are trying to achieve.
Host: And so what's the time commitment from the time the person gets the first treatment; is it one treatment, five treatment?
Dr. Judi: Usually we need 3 to 4 treatments even for pretty involved cases of acne patients and over a period of one treatment,a month, it could be 3 to 4 months in duration, during which time they use use topical medications, but not oral antibiotics or pills or acne cream.
Host: And it's permanent?
Dr. Judi: And it's -- we have now 3 year follow up, I don't like to use big words, but I think it is permanent as I have seen and even Accutane is the only other long-term treatment we have, very often people need a second or a third course, which each course is six months and I don't see this with my laser treatment.
Host: So, it's a really good option for folks that have problems with their skin with acne.
Dr. Judi: It's a wonderful treatment and it's very easy, it's very available. A lot of people don't know much about it and I think it's very important that people do know because people get depressed and they feel guilty and they think they have acne because they didn't clean their skin right or they ate something wrong and they not feel depressed but, now they feel like they are the cause of their problem and this can actually alleviate the problem altogether.
