Hi! My name is Katie Jackson and I'm here at Studio Bleu Dance Center in Ashburn, Virginia. Today, I'm going to teach you how to jazz dance. We're going to start off Leap Turn and now I'll break it down for you.
We're going to start off what we called a shanae. You're going to step out with your right foot, stay on your tiptoes or releve, bring your other foot in, stay up and bring your arms in. When your arms come in, they need to be blocked out so you need to be strong coming from your back. So if you see, my shoulder blades kind of pop out in the back, my arms are locked. So we're going to shanae up.
Then, we do a shanae and plié. Bend both legs, bring both feet in. From here, I'm going to extend my right leg out, stretching through my leg, pointing my feet, leap and then turn out if it. So now we'll do it a little bit faster.
Now when you do this, your shanae is at the power. The faster your turn in the beginning, the more power you have to leap. So shanae up, shanae down and really make sure you push and leap. Okay, now we'll do it at full speed. Shanae up, shanae down, leap and I'll do it one more time; shanae up, shanae down, leap. Now I'll break it down one more time.
We start off with a shanae. It's best if you start off pointing your right in front of you, eyes straight, arms kept in, feet come in nice and tight. I do another shanae and plié, bring both legs in. When I'm in this position, my weight should be on my left foot in the back. I'm going to push into the leap and come down.
Now, a slightly faster; shanae up, down and leap. Make sure you extend your both legs, point your toes and then straighten your knees and one more time at full speed and that is how we do a Leap turn and now I will show you how to do a Calypso Turn.
