Male Speaker: This is suppose this is to treat pain. It turns out that inserting needles into your skin may actually help relief pain. It’s a kind of new idea here but it has been used in China in other Asian countries for over 1000 years and million Chinese people gave me wrong can I, but here in the west we thought that for a long time until 1971 were New York times reporter James Rustin wrote about how inserting needles in to your skin could help relief pain in different areas. But it’s not exactly theses kinds of needles.
Acupuncture needles are fine and hair like they are inserted in specific parts of the body which according to traditional Chinese medicine help spine real learning the flow of Qi your bodies internal energy what still medicines still struggle to explain exactly how acupuncture work but many studies have shoen it does seem to help, in reason years acupuncture has become more popular in western countries and its now recognized by the National Institute of health as an acceptable form of treatment for pain Dr. Lisa Hollingsworth at the Beverly hills corporatist the acupuncture say some adults can be skeptical but its much easier for the kids wait.
Lisa Hollingsworth: The important part is for the parents to sort set it up before they come in and explain that a visit to -- the visit to the acupuncturist or corporatist is not scary like getting an injection or getting blood on and that is something that is going to help improve their performance. I presented as something cool they can tell their friends about, I show them the needle they see that its tiny that it is hair like and they think its kind of clean exciting I actually sometimes would you want myself first just to show them its pain you know its very, very minimal pain not like something being pushed in like a vaccination and then are more like little pins hence seem to be more receptive and mentally just not as a face adults depending on what the presentation of the child is if they have an injury lot of times we do local acupuncture points on the side of the pain the near ankle on our shoulder and if they have something more involved like asthma symptoms of asthma or such then the points may a bit.
Male Speaker: This kids seem pretty okay with it but how exactly does the doctor go about convincing a kid to sit still for an acupuncture treatment when it is hard enough to get a job is sit for a doctor and get a shot and that’s only one needle another thing they consider about acupuncture is that it has almost no side effects like pain medication can generally any side effects were caused by improperly sterilize needles or treatment by unqualified practitioner. Unqualified that’s definitely me and this in fact is not the right needle so let’s have some one who is qualified and understands what the right needles are how they are used explain to us exactly how those treatment administered.
Lisa Hollingsworth: Each acupuncture needle comes individually wrapped they are sterile or one time use only and they do come in a variety of gauges and that just means width of the needle and this is a fairly small line and I will just open one out to show you its in a package this particular type of needle that I am using here has what we called a guide tube around it not all of them are like this but the guide tube just allows precision and you know sort of an easy way to make sure you are getting you that point that you want. For kids I use the smaller gauge the kids really will feel asleep while they have the needles in them and its just a manner of applying it to the area you want to acupuncture and I can just show you that myself you just tap in and then you just beneath pull it down. Acupunctures have a very fine feel you can feel resistance from the muscles of those been injury you can fill bogginess and swelling and you know how deep that you should go depending on the area it varies.
