If each one of us just did little things for the environment everyday, it will all add up to a very big difference. For example, how do people in your home dispose of dead batteries?
More the 15 billion batteries are purchased in North America every year, and in turn, that means millions and millions of toxic heavy metal object are tossed into our earth amongst the landfill. So, what does that do?
Batteries can vaporize and pollute the air when they are burned. Batteries can pollute our water. Battery component can reach from landfill and pollute the environment. While this powerful energy source is one of mankind’s most important inventions, still our environment is at risk if these light and portable cells are not properly discarded.
Here is what you can do. Use rechargeable batteries. The newest generation of rechargeable batteries is so much better than it used to be, because now, they are as reliable as convenient and it is easy to use as a regular alkaline battery.
Sanyo scientists tell us for example that their innovation, the Eneloop Battery is a true breakthrough as a renewable energy source. First, this newest generation of rechargeable batteries comes pre-charged. They can be used immediately right out of the package. Secondly, remember how quickly old rechargeable batteries would lose their storage power, about 1% per day. But now, these latest batteries lose only 15% of their charge per year. That means, all of our battery operated items will always be ready to use.
Scientist also tell us this newest kind of battery can be charged 1000 times. In a research trial performed with a digital camera shows that it was able to produce 4.4 times more pictures than it would have with a dry cell alkaline battery. Best of all, once the energy is finally depleted, it’s contents are recyclable.
So yes, do keep asking what you can do everyday to protect the environment. Thinking f a battery as a renewable resource is just one of the little things that really adds up to a very big difference.
