Learn About Carter Godwin Woodson

Finally, the origin of black history month is unknown to many. So, last but certainly not least is Carter Godwin Woodson, the originator of black history month.

This celebration began as legal history week in 1926 and the intent was to preserve the history of black people and to educate all people about the contributions made by blacks throughout history.

An interesting fact is that Woodson who was born to a slave on December 19, 1875 start his high school education at the age of 20. He went on to study at Berea College, the University of Chicago, and Harvard University where he earned his PhD in 1912.

Woodson over came a difficult background to show the world that you can achieve anything at any age. Remember that name Carter Godwin Woodson, black history month is his legacy.
