Especially if they have a common complication of diabetes called peripheral neuropathy, which is the loss of feeling in the feet and toes. Patients with diabetic neuropathy could have sharp objects such as tags or splendors lodged in their feet and they wouldn't be able to feel them. Dry or crack skin in calluses can also cause trouble. Left untreated these conditions can create a foot ulcer or open sore. The ulcers can then to lead more serious infections such as gangrene or bone infections. Which may necessitate amputation? Patients with diabetes: Should inspect their feet daily, moisturize regularly and never go barefoot and always wear shoes that properly fit.
