The owners of this home recently had to paint it and of course, to get the best results around fixtures, it is always good to take them off and as you can see, the light fixture here is missing. It is in my hands. It is time to put it back up. But they are wondering, it looks old, is it safe to put this light fixture back up, what should you look at?
The first thing I look at is the wiring. Make sure that the wiring is in good shape. Feel it, twist it, make sure you look for cracks or splits in the insulation. If you do not see any, that is a good sign. The next thing you want to do is look inside the fixture at the actual socket where the light bulb goes. Inspect it for corrosion. If you see some, it might be bad sign. There is a little tab at the bottom of the socket. Always take a needle nose pliers or if your finger if you can and try to pry that back up. That will make sure that the light bulb gets good contact when you screw it back in.
Remember to put the wires to get it correctly, attach the white wire of the fixture to the white wire that is in the box the same thing with the black wire and do not forget the ground wire. The ground wire is very important. Attach it to the bare copper wire that is in the electrical box.
See this warning label in the lid of the light fixture. Make sure you pay attention to that as you finish putting the light together, do not exceed the bulb wattage that it talks about. If you do that and you are going to have one safe installation.
