Glass etching is a beautiful way to add a design to ordinary glass objects such as cocktail glasses, cabinet glass and vases. And I will show you how easy it is to do. I am Meghan Carter and this is Ask the Decorator.
Glass etching adds a personal touch to your home décor and it is inexpensive way to add glamour to your home. The easiest way to etch glass is to use a glass etching stencil, but it can be hard to find the pattern that you like. So I will show you how to etch glass with the homemade stencil.
First, wash your glass with soap and water and dry with a clean cloth. Then, put of liner contact which is line with an adhesive side onto the glass. To keep from getting bubbles under the vinyl contact apply the vinyl contact very slowly, applying pressure as you go. To make the design on the vinyl you can use carbon paper or a regular stencil. Trace your design on to the vinyl. If your pattern is linear, you can use a ruler and draw it right onto the contact paper then cut out your design using a craft knife or razor blade. The holes you cut in the vinyl are the places where the glass will be etch.
Once you have cut out your entire pattern, apply a thick layer of etching cream with a brush. Make sure the entire stencil area is covered with etching cream. Let the cream sit for the amount of time suggested on the label then rinse it off with water. Remove the vinyl contact and clean the glass with the glass cleaner. Was that not so simple? And it turns out so beautiful from cutting glass to beautiful vases. Glass etching can be used in a variety of ways.
