Female Speaker: And then I want to make sure that we you start that you know the rules of the kitchen and the only reason I say rules is because we have to be careful. You will be working with knives, and in some cases you'll be working with hot items. We want to make sure that we know exactly, how to perform in the kitchen so that we don't hurt ourselves or others and the first thing, if you are working, this is our working area. If you spill something, you want to clean it up right away. If it spills on the floor, it's very important. Why do you think that is?
Female Speaker: So someone couldn't slip.
Female Speaker: Exactly. That would be really dangerous. You think of all the counters, you think of having a hot stove and if you spill something in front of the stove, they will slip and fall. So you want to make sure, you clean up spills, whether it's on the top or whether it's on the floor immediately. Also, we don't have any in here today, we are not going to be using any, but if you use equipment with an electrical cord, you want to make sure that you know how to work that, that mom and dad know you are using it, or ask mom and dad to help to use that and that's -- a mixer, you can use that for a Cuisinart or just a hand beater, but you should ask mom and dad to know before you start and then clothing.
One good thing about clothing that you are wearing today, first of all, you are probably nice and warm, which is good. We have the aprons on, which protects your clothing from any food, little pockets so you can hold on to your towels. So if you have your special chef's towel, you can slip that right into there and always have it with you. Sleeves, if you do have long sleeves, I have seen you push them up and that helps getting the sleeves out of the way of any frame or getting stuck on something and accidentally pulling it off.
Also if you have a T-Shirt, if you are choosing that to wear in apron, what happens, is that T-Shirt gets into the fire? That's dangerous, right. That's scaring the heck out of you, right? So that's why you want to make sure, you have the apron thats holding everything back and everything is tucked in nice and tight, so you don't need to worry about that. But for safety, you want to make sure and that also includes jewelry.
I have taken off, all my rings, I have taken off my watch. The only reason I would keep my watch is if I wanted to time something at a later time during the cooking process, just so I have it on me. Glasses, those work just fine. You will be able to see everything, you might need to clear them off, if you get some steam on them, but they will be fine and then any necklaces, should be tucked in. It's okay if you have jewelry but then you keep your hair pulled back, right? Got it.
When you are moving through, we haven't talked about, that these are going to be used for cooking, so they might be hot. So that's why we have this nifty, little towel right here, because you can pull it out, grab it at any point, even if its warm, even if it's not. Just get into the habit of having your towel with you and the reason I have a towel and not maybe an oven mitt, in the restaurant we use towels for everything and I have just gotten used to the fact that if I had a towel with me, I always have protection, no matter where I am going, I have it on me in your pocket. So wherever you are, you can pull it out and grab something if you need to,. Even when moving something to the sick, you want to make sure that you use your towel and put it all the way in.
One of the problems with these nifty pans here is that look, see how they stick out like that, what if I walked by and hit that, that would all be on the floor.
So when you are cooking, you just want to make sure that the handle are turned in just enough so if somebody walked by, they wouldn't catch that with their sleeve, with their shoulder, with their side, so it doesn't go on your floor. Here, keep this back and we talked about this pot over here too. I just want to reiterate, if you have a pot like that, and that's filled with water, filled with pasta, get help.
That can be really heavy. I mean, you have felt these empty. Can you imagine if there was full of water too, that would be very, very heavy. If you are walking through a kitchen with a knife, we have a couple knives right here, these are extremely sharp and when you are holding them, you don't want to be talking with your knife, pointing at people, or making a joke and laughing.
You want to be walking with your knife, directly to your side, all the way up against your leg and then when you are walking behind someone, just stay behind. Just let them know, you are there. Just gently touch them and stay behind, coming behind you and then once you walked by, they know that you are behind them and that you moved safely and the knife was never even close to them.
Other points for knife safety, we have a couple of different versions here and you can see the edges on there are very, very, very sharp. So when you set a knife down, you want to make sure that wherever you are working right here, that the blade is pointed away, if you have it right next to you. So that if I ran my hand up to grab something, the blade wouldn't catch my fingers.
It happens a lot. If you do cut yourself or burn yourself, mom and dad need to know. You can't just keep on going. First of all, you need to get a Band Aid on there to clean up any -- if you bleed in a little bit or if you have a little blister from the burn you want to put a Band Aid on that to keep it safe and sanitary. But mom and dad should know. If you have a fire, what do you think you should do? What happens, let's say if this catches a fire right there. What should I do if this pot catches on fire? What would you do?
Female Speaker: Use a fire extinguisher.
Female Speaker: Fire extinguisher. Always know where the fire extinguisher is, in your house and even ask mom and dad, how to use it. If you are cooking with flame for the most part, you should have an adult present, but if you need to know where your fire extinguisher is, what else could I do to this pan to stop a fire?
Female Speaker: Cover with something so there is no oxygen getting in there.
Female Speaker: Alright. She is so smart. If I cover that up exactly right, no oxygen can get to the fire, so it will die. If I have nothing, even if I have a bowl to put on top or another pan to put on top, something very quickly to stop a fire, if you need to. But a lid would work. What is one rule with fires that you should always follow aside from getting it out, getting your parents, what's one thing you should never throw on a fire.
Female Speaker: Water.
Female Speaker: Water. That is so true, if you throw water on oil what is going to happen, is it's going to spit right back up at you and quite likely will harm you more than the fire would have. Cover that up, have a fire extinguisher on hand, even baking soda, if some oil spills over and start over fire, baking soda would put it right out.
So those are some things you really want to make sure that you pay attention to. Do you have any questions about the safety of the kitchen now? Nothing? We will probably find something.
