The great grand of all open source projects these days is something called Linux; or possibly Linux or even Linux. It is an operating system that a Finnish student by the name of Linus Torvalds began writing back in 1991 and with the cooperation of a huge team of contributors collaborating over the internet, he and his team were able to produce an operating system that scales from tiny embedded systems all the way up to giant super computers. Some of the larger ones and perhaps the most popular is something called Red Hat Linux. Red Hat is produced by a large multinational corporation and they have contributed much to the development of the Linux operating system. In fact, their commercial success has allowed them to hire engineers to work and improve the operating system as a whole.
Another popular distribution of Linux is called Debian or more recent descendant is Ubuntu. With a little help searching online, you will be able to find the websites for these projects without too much trouble.
