Hey! Welcome to watchmojo.com, I am your host Derrick, and we know that you visit to watchmojo or usually out of this world as they are, but we are going to take it one-step further.
We are going to explore our solar system and all the planets in it. Just in case you do not remember anything from your old school dioramas.
Mercury is the closest of the planet to the sun and it is also the smallest planet in the solar system. It makes a complete orbit around the sun every 88 days.
The diameter measures less than 5,000 kilometers making it actually 0.383 of Earth size, it is one of the four terrestrial planets, meaning that it is primarily composed of silicate rock.
The surface of Mercury is similar to that of the moon because of heavy creatoring. It is the least understood of the four inner planets because there have been few space missions to reach out that far towards the sun.
The reason for this it is actually takes more rocket fuel to go that deep in to the Sun’s gravitational well that it would to escape the solar system.
In the 1970’s, NASA’s Mariner 10 made the closest approach to Mercury. It made to within 327 kilometers of the surface.
Mercury has no natural satellites and its temperature ranges from -180 to 430 degrees Celsius. The bottoms of craters are the coldest spots on the planet.
